WHAT
IS A RING MODULATOR?
The ring modulator uses an internal oscillator and balanced
mixer to generate new harmonics that correspond to the sum
and differences of the frequencies of the input signal and
the local oscillator. For example if the input signal from
a guitar or keyboard is 800 cps and the local oscillator is
at 600 cps then the output will be two frequencies of 200
and 1400 cps.
The level of the output signal tracks the level of the input,
so the original
signal is transformed into new frequencies.
WHERE
DID THE RING MODULATOR COME FROM?
The
first use of ring modulators in music was in the 1950s, where
surplus ex-military equipment was adapted to avant-garde tape
music and performances.
WHAT
DOES A RING MODULATOR SOUND LIKE?
Ring
modulators produce a clangorous, "metallic" result
often used for special effects, in synth programming, and
so on.
One popular use has been to process vocals, which produces
sci-fi sounding "robotic" voices.
You can also achieve a very strange clanging, bell-like sound
that can only be created with a ring modulator. Useful for
producing gong sounds, bell sounds, and many strange sounds
having no description.

The

The Frostwave Blue Ringer has a balance control which allows
the ratio of original signal and new harmonics to be varied.
That way you can mix two signals (inputted instruments or
samples) and either colour the sound of one with the other
to create a subtle effect, or just crank the two and make
something industrial and nasty.
At very low oscillator frequencies, the Blue Ringer V2 acts
as a tremolo, with the depth controlled by the 'balance' knob.
The Blue Ringer v2 is a killer effect. Like The Resonator,

I have both a DOD Gonkulator and a Electro-Harmonix Frequency
Analyzer, but The Blue Ringer v2 is a much better effect
